The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is investigating airbag issues to decide if a current recall should be expanded to include more vehicles. The problem is related to an airbag inflator that is installed in millions of vehicles. Takata Corp. manufactured the inflators, and they are linked to at least eight fatalities due to the airbag exploding and metal shrapnel injuring people. Honda and Fiat Chrysler currently have a recall that includes 19.2 million vehicles, and that number could soon increase for vehicles produced by Mercedes-Benz, Tesla, Jaguar-Land Rover, Suzuki, Volkswagen, Spartan Motors, and Volvo. The investigation is to determine what vehicle models have the Takata airbag inflator that uses ammonium nitrate propellant. The NHTSA believes additional vehicles will be recalled in the near future.
